Satellite Operations Engineer (m/f/d)

Permanent employee, Full-time · Munich

The Mission

Munich-based OroraTech is developing a constellation of nano-satellites with thermal infrared cameras for automated wildfire detection, severe weather warnings and many other applications. Following the successful launches of our hosted payload missions, FOREST-1 in January 2022 and FOREST-2 in June 2023, we have achieved two major milestones in 2025 with the launch of FOREST-3, our first fully in-house developed satellite, and OTC-P1 our first hosted payload constellation plane. We are now focused on operating these satellites and preparing for the launch of our second set of 8 satellites, OTC-P2, planned for the end of 2025. As we continue to expand our satellite network and advance our in-house capabilities, we are looking for a talented and experienced engineer to join our team in satellite operations. The best candidate will be joining a very motivated and highly enthusiastic team of experts in the fields of mechanical, optics, electronics, spacecraft, and software engineering.

  • Generate regular status reports on the spacecraft’s performance, mission progress, and notable events.

  • Provide expert guidance on operational improvements and future mission planning considerations.

  • Develop and configure utility tools: data visualization dashboards, health monitoring watchers, task automation routines, helper scripts, etc.

Relevant Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Software Engineering or a related technical discipline is required. Advanced degrees are preferred.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in satellite mission control operations, with direct involvement in LEOP and commissioning phases.

  • Specific experience with Earth observation satellite systems is highly desirable.

  • Good understanding of orbital mechanics and space environment related risks.

  • Strong knowledge of satellite ground systems, tracking networks, and command & control protocols.

  • Ability to assess and interpret satellite telemetry for operational decision-making.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in Python programming, coupled with a foundational knowledge of Linux, bash scripting, and version control using Git. Docker, Orekit or skyfield and system validation tests are a plus.

  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure during critical mission phases.
